While the creator of “Beetle Bailey” may be well into his 80′s, Mort Walker has been drawing the popular Army-based comic strip for nearly 60 years after it first appeared in 12 newspapers throughout the nation in September 1950.
“I don’t know how I’d be retired,” Walker told the Associated Press, “I wake up every day with another idea.”
While “Beetle Bailey” isn’t published in The Orange County Register, you can catch up on all of Beetle’s military misadventures online with ArcaMax Publishing, which syndicates the comic strip online.
You can celebrate the success of Mort Walker this Labor Day Weekend in San Francisco at the Cartoon Art Museum. With plenty of famous comics on exhibit, the museum plays tribute to Mort Walker through September 19th. With the long Labor Day Weekend ahead, this gives you the perfect excuse to take a well deserved vacation this weekend.
Instead of taking the long 7-hour drive up the I-5, you could leave Los Angeles International Airport late Friday evening and catch a flight up to San Francisco. The airport is just 20-minutes away from the museum and there are dozens of hotels near by, including the Grant Plaza Hotel, just a few blocks away from the museum. There is also the Courtyard-Downtown with a quick walking distance from the museum.
Madison Newport is a 48-minute drive away from Los Angeles International Airport, going north on I-405.
